Buying guide

What counts as climbing gear

Your saddle and rope get most of the attention, but the small parts decide how smooth your day goes. This section holds the tree climbing equipment that connects and controls your system: ascenders and foot loops, mechanical friction devices for MRS and SRS, hitch cord and split tails, micro pulleys, swivels, rings, carabiners, snap hooks, lanyards and fliplines, chainsaw lanyards and friction savers.

Most of it is life-support gear, which means it should meet ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's rating for the way you plan to use it. Read the instructions that come with each device. Many are approved only for specific rope diameters and constructions.

If you are not sure which subcategory fits, think about where the item sits in your system. Anything between your saddle and the rope is usually here; the saddle itself, spurs, helmets and throw line have their own departments.

Matching gear to your climbing system

Start with your rope diameter and system. An 11.7 mm rope and a mechanical device rated for 11 to 13 mm will not behave like a hitch tied on a 13 mm rope. Check that your friction device, rope grab and pulley all agree with the rope you actually climb on.

MRS climbers usually run a hitch cord or mechanical device, a micro pulley and a friction saver to protect the rope and the tree. SRS climbers add a rope wrench or SRT device, a chest harness and often a foot ascender. Spikes, which people also search as tree climbing spikes, live in the spurs department for removal work.

Hardware that earns its keep

Good connectors are cheap insurance. Use auto-locking carabiners that need at least two deliberate actions to open in any life-support position, and keep a few non-locking carabiners and gear hooks on your saddle for tools. Swivels reduce twist in your lanyard or rope bridge, and rings make a clean, low-friction point for slings and bridges.

Brands like Notch, Petzl, DMM, ISC and CMI make most of the hardware in this section. Mixing brands is fine as long as each part is compatible and rated for the job.

Pulleys deserve a special mention. A micro pulley below your hitch makes slack tending smooth and saves your hitch cord, while a larger pulley can help with haul systems and rescue setups. Friction savers protect both rope and tree at your tie-in, and they make MRS climbing noticeably easier because the rope runs over metal or rings instead of bark.

Care, storage and retirement

Keep textiles out of the sun and away from bar oil, fuel and battery acid. Store rope in a bag, not loose in the truck bed. Inspect every device and connector before each climb, and log when life-support items went into service so you know when they are due for retirement under the manufacturer's guidelines.

Clean hardware with fresh water and let it dry fully. Lubricate gates and cams only with what the manufacturer recommends, and wipe away excess so it does not collect grit. Retire textiles that have been cut, glazed, chemically contaminated or shock loaded, and retire metal gear that is cracked, deformed or worn into sharp edges. The cost of replacing a piece of tree climbing gear is always smaller than the cost of trusting one that should have been retired.

Common questions

What is the most important piece of tree climbing gear?

Every life-support component matters, but the parts that connect you to the rope, your friction device and connectors, deserve the most attention because they carry your full load on every climb.

Can I mix gear from different brands?

Yes, as long as each component is compatible with the others, rated for your rope diameter, and used according to its own manufacturer's instructions.

How often should I inspect climbing equipment?

Before every climb, plus a more thorough documented inspection at regular intervals. Retire anything damaged, shock loaded or past the manufacturer's lifespan.

Where are tree climbing spikes?

Climbing spikes, also called spurs or gaffs, are in our spurs department along with replacement gaffs, pads and parts.
