Buying guide

Harnesses and rescue practice

Full-body harnesses are used in aerial lifts and some rope access work where fall arrest is required. They are different from tree climbing saddles, so follow the lift and harness maker's instructions on which to use. Fit the harness snugly and inspect webbing, stitching and buckles before each use.

A rescue training mannequin lets crews practice aerial rescue at realistic weight without putting a person at risk. Regular practice with a qualified trainer is the best fall rescue equipment you can have.

Training and inspection

Fall protection is only as good as the people using it. Anyone in an aerial lift or working at height should be trained on harness fit, anchorage and the lift manufacturer's requirements. Crews should practice aerial rescue on a regular schedule with a qualified trainer.

Inspect harnesses before each use, look for cuts, burns, broken stitching and damaged hardware, and retire any harness that has arrested a fall. Store fall protection clean and dry and away from chemicals. Follow ANSI Z133 and the equipment manufacturer's instructions.

Common questions

Is a full-body harness the same as a climbing saddle?

No. They serve different purposes and are built to different standards. Use the one required for the work you are doing.
