Buying guide

Types of arborist slings

Webbing slings and loop runners are flat and grip bark well for anchoring blocks. Rope slings such as dead-eye slings choke wood and pass easily through crotches. Adjustable whoopie slings change length quickly to fit different stem sizes. Round slings are used for crane picks.

Pick slings rated for your heaviest loads, protect them from saw cuts and sharp edges, and retire any sling that is cut, burned, abraded or has a missing tag.

Sling care and retirement

Slings work hard and often sit right next to the cut, so keep the saw clear and protect slings at sharp edges. Rotate where you choke a sling so wear spreads out, and wash them now and then to remove grit that cuts fibers from the inside.

Retire any sling that is cut, melted, heavily abraded, stiff, or has damaged splices or stitching, and any sling whose tag or rating is unknown. Rigging rings combined with slings create friction setups and redirects; use rings rated for rigging loads. Keep a few sizes and types so you can match the sling to the job.

Common questions

How do I choose a sling length?

It should wrap the stem with room to choke or basket it. Adjustable slings cover a range of sizes.
