RiggingPro grade

This thimble loop rigging sling from The Splice Shop uses 1/2 in rope, a 35 in length, and a 14mm ring, so you can choke a stem and build a quick rigging point. The thimble protects the loop where it meets hardware.

How a ring sling rigs

Wrap the stem, pass the thimble loop through the ring, and cinch it down: the sling chokes tight and holds its position on a vertical spar better than a basket hitch. The ring or thimble then becomes the anchor for a block, a lowering line, or a redirect.

The thimble keeps the eye round and protects the rope where it bears on a carabiner or shackle. A 35 in sling suits small to medium stems; it will not wrap a big trunk. Look through our other heavy-duty slings for longer and heavier options.

Because it is short and light, it is easy to carry up on the saddle and set wherever the next rigging point needs to go.

Sizing and inspection

Size the sling to the wood you are taking down and to the rest of the system, including the rope, block, and anchor. A 1/2 in sling is meant for pruning-size wood and small tops, not for heavy rigging of big pieces.

Before each job check the rope for cut strands, glazing, and stiff spots, and look at the ring and thimble for grooves, cracks, or deformation. Rig within the rated strength of every component, and make sure the crew is trained in rigging practice under ANSI Z133 and the maker's instructions.
