Buying guide

Picking a throw weight

Throw weights usually range from about 8 to 16 ounces. Lighter weights travel farther and slip through small crotches but may not pull line down through rough bark; heavier ones fall more reliably. Many climbers carry two sizes. Pair the weight with a slick throw line that runs smoothly and stores tangle-free in a cube or bag. Make sure the drop zone is clear before every throw and never throw near power lines.

Storage and technique

A throw line storage cube folds open on the ground so line feeds out without tangling, then folds closed for transport. Weights like the Petzl Jet have a rounded shape that slides through crotches and bark. Practice underhand and two-handed throws to place your line accurately. When the weight is over the right crotch, use it to pull up your climbing line or a heavier line, and check the crotch from different angles before you climb.

Always keep the ground crew clear while throwing.
