The Biggest Husqvarna Chainsaw, and the Lightest
Which is the biggest Husqvarna chainsaw, who actually needs one, and the big pro saws and light top-handles most tree crews run instead.
What is the biggest Husqvarna chainsaw?
The biggest Husqvarna chainsaw is the 3120 XP. At 118.8 cc it is the largest and most powerful saw in Husqvarna's professional lineup, rated at about 8.4 hp (6.2 kW), and the power head alone weighs about 22.9 lb before you add a bar and chain. It is usually sold as a power head only, so you choose the bar and chain to suit the work.
Below the 3120 XP sits a group of large professional saws in the 90 cc class, then the 70 cc saws that most removal crews treat as their everyday big saw. At the other end of the range are the small top-handle saws climbers carry in the tree, which are the lightest Husqvarna chainsaws you can buy.
This guide works down the range from largest to lightest, with the figures we are confident of, and explains which size makes sense for real tree work. For full details on any model, see the product pages in our chainsaws section.
- Husqvarna 3120 XP: 118.8 cc, the largest and most powerful
- Husqvarna 395XP: 93.6 cc, classic carbureted big saw
- Husqvarna 592XP: 92.7 cc, newer big saw with AutoTune
- Husqvarna 390XP: 88 cc, a lighter big-saw option
- Husqvarna 572XP and 372XP: about 70 cc, the removal-crew workhorses
- Husqvarna T525: 27 cc, the lightest gas top-handle
Husqvarna 3120 XP: who needs a 120 cc saw
The Husqvarna 3120 XP is built for very large wood: felling and bucking big-diameter trunks, slabbing with a chainsaw mill, and cutting wide stumps and butt logs that a 90 cc saw would labor through. It pulls long bars that smaller saws cannot keep up with, and it is a common choice for chainsaw milling because it holds speed in a long, wide cut.
For most tree services it is a specialty saw, not a daily one. A 3120 XP with a long bar is heavy to carry across a yard and tiring to hold in a bucking position all day. Crews that own one tend to bring it out for the biggest removals, storm work on old trees and milling jobs, and leave it on the truck the rest of the time.
Big saws like this use a decompression valve to make starting manageable. Many owners run .404 chain on longer bars for durability in big wood, though 3/8 in chain is also used depending on the bar setup. Check the operator's manual for the bar and chain combinations Husqvarna approves for the saw.
395XP, 592XP and 390XP: the 90 cc class
For crews that regularly cut large wood but do not need a 120 cc saw, the 90 cc class is the sweet spot. The 395XP is the classic choice: 93.6 cc, about 6.6 hp, a conventional carburetor and a long track record on felling and bucking jobs. It is heavy, simple and strong, and a lot of saw hands still prefer it.
The 592XP is Husqvarna's newer saw in this class. At 92.7 cc it is rated at about 7.5 hp, and it uses AutoTune to manage the fuel mixture as conditions change. On paper and in the cut it is the more powerful of the two, and it is the one to look at if you want a modern big saw that several people can share without retuning.
The 390XP, at 88 cc, is a little lighter and was popular as a big saw that is still reasonable to carry. Husqvarna's 585 is another large professional saw a step below the 592XP. Availability of the older carbureted models varies by market, so check what is currently sold and supported where you work.
572XP and 372XP: the size most crews actually use
If you asked a room of removal climbers and ground crew which Husqvarna they reach for first, most would name a 70 cc saw. The 572XP (70.6 cc, AutoTune) and the older 372XP (70.7 cc, carbureted) have enough power to run an 18 to 28 inch bar for felling and bucking, and they are light enough to carry around a job and handle while blocking down a spar.
These saws are not the biggest Husqvarna chainsaws, but they cover the large majority of residential removal work. A crew with one 70 cc saw and one 90 cc or larger saw can handle almost anything that comes up. We compare the two in detail in our Husqvarna 372XP vs 572XP guide.
The lightest Husqvarna chainsaw
At the other end of the range, the lightest gas Husqvarna chainsaw is the T525 top-handle. It is a 27 cc saw that weighs about 5.9 lb as a power head and runs a 10 or 12 inch bar. It is built for pruning and light limb work aloft, where every ounce on the saddle matters.
Most production climbers step up to the T540XP, which has a 37.7 cc engine and runs a 12 to 16 inch bar, for more cutting speed on removals. Husqvarna also makes battery top-handle saws such as the T540i XP, which are quiet and start instantly, at the cost of carrying and charging batteries.
Top-handle saws are designed for trained arborists working in trees, not for general ground use. On the ground, run a rear-handle saw with both hands on the handles.
Bars, chain and fuel for big saws
Bar length is where big saws earn their keep. A 90 cc or larger saw can pull a long bar through hardwood, but every inch of bar adds weight and makes the saw more front-heavy. Many crews keep a long bar for felling and big rounds and a shorter one for everyday bucking on the same power head.
Match pitch and gauge across your bars, chain and sprockets, and keep the oiler adjusted so a long bar gets enough oil. Our bars and chain section covers common setups. Run fresh fuel at the ratio in the manual, keep the air filter clean, and check the decompression valve and spark plug at regular service intervals.
How to choose the right size Husqvarna
Buy for the wood you cut every week, not the biggest tree you might see once a year. A saw that is too large wears you out and costs more in fuel, bars and chain. A saw that is too small burns time in big wood and gets overworked. For many tree services the right setup is a top-handle for the climber, a 50 to 60 cc saw for limbing and brush, a 70 cc saw for removals, and a 90 cc or larger saw for the largest trees.
Whatever size you run, wear chainsaw pants or chaps, a helmet with eye and hearing protection, gloves and boots, and get proper chainsaw and felling training. A big saw with a long bar has more kickback energy and is harder to control, so it rewards good technique and punishes bad habits.
