Buying guide

Choosing a helmet

Climbing-style helmets like the Petzl Vertex Vent and Kask Super Plasma use a chinstrap to stay on during a fall and are common for climbers. Forestry systems often include a mesh visor and earmuffs, which suits ground crew and saw work. Look for the standards printed on the shell, such as ANSI Z89.1, and decide whether you need a vented or electrically rated helmet based on your work near power. Wear a properly fitted helmet whenever you are aloft or in the work zone, and replace it after a hard impact or as the manufacturer advises.

Visors, hearing and accessories

Many helmets accept clip-on visors and earmuffs, so you can build a full head protection system. A mesh visor keeps out sawdust and chips; a clear visor protects from fine debris. Earmuffs are essential around saws and chippers. Headlamps clip onto many climbing helmets for early starts and storm work. Make sure any accessory is compatible with your helmet model so it does not affect fit or protection.

Common questions

Can I use a regular hard hat for tree climbing?

Many basic hard hats have no chinstrap and can come off in a fall. Climbing-style helmets are designed to stay on and are preferred aloft.
