Rigging Blocks, Pulleys and Hardware

A rigging block redirects the rigging rope in the tree and takes the load when a piece is lowered. This section groups arborist blocks, pulleys, rigging plates and steel hardware.

Buying guide

Blocks, pulleys and plates

Arborist blocks are built for the high, dynamic loads of lowering wood and are sized by rope diameter. Smaller pulleys handle lighter rigging, redirects and mechanical advantage systems. A rigging plate creates multiple attachment points at an anchor for organized setups.

Check the rated strength, rope size and sheave diameter, and pair blocks with slings rated for the same loads. Inspect sheaves for wear and side plates for damage before use.

Choosing the right hardware

Start from your rope diameter and the biggest pieces you expect to lower. That sets the block size, and the block sets the sling and connectors. Swing-side pulleys open to load the rope mid-line, which saves time on redirects and speed lines. Steel hardware such as rings and clevises builds friction setups, redirects and pulling systems.

Every component carries a rated strength. In rigging the weakest link sets the system's limit, and dynamic loading can multiply forces. Keep rigging hardware separate from climbing hardware, and retire anything that is bent, cracked or shows sheave wear.

Common questions

What is the difference between a rigging block and a pulley?

Blocks are generally heavier and built for big dynamic rigging loads. Pulleys are lighter and used for smaller loads, redirects and haul systems.
