RiggingPro grade

The SMC Apex Direct 1.5 is a rescue-grade pulley in a larger size than the 1.1 version, giving a bigger sheave for haul systems, redirects, and light rigging. Tree crews use it where a micro pulley is too small but a full rigging block is more than the job needs.

Why a larger sheave helps

A bigger sheave bends the rope less and generally runs more efficiently, which you feel when you are pulling through a 3:1 to tension a line, hauling a heavy tool to the climber, or redirecting a lowering line around a stem.

The 1.5 size sits between compact pulleys and true rigging blocks. Compare it with the 1.1 and other options in our rigging blocks to match the pulley to your system.

It also suits tag lines that have to run around a stem or over a fence. The larger sheave reduces wear on the rope and makes the ground worker's job easier.

Use within the rating

Read the side-plate markings for the rope range and strength and keep loads well inside them. Do not use it in place of a rigging block for blocking down heavy wood.

Before each use, spin the sheave, check the side plates and axle for cracks, burrs, or play, and clean off sap and grit. If it goes into a climbing or rescue system, life-support use must follow ANSI Z133, the manufacturer's instructions, and your training.

Store it dry and away from chemicals, and retire it after a drop from height onto a hard surface unless the maker says otherwise.
