Buying guide

Hand pruners and pole pruner heads

A bypass hand pruner like the Felco 2 handles small live twigs and branches with a clean scissor cut. For small limbs out of reach, a pole pruner head on a fiberglass pole uses a rope-driven blade to snip from the ground. Keep blades sharp and adjusted, oil the pivot, and replace worn blades. Wear eye protection and keep your free hand out of the cut.

Choosing tools

The Felco 2 is a classic bypass hand pruner with replaceable blades and parts. The Marvin pruner head and bull pruner head with single pulley mount on fiberglass poles for pruning from the ground. The bull pruner head handles slightly larger limbs. Look at cutting capacity, how the blade is driven and whether the head fits your poles. Clean sap off blades after use and keep them sharp for clean cuts that heal well.

Replacement blades and springs are available for many of these tools.
