The classic bypass hand pruner, with replaceable parts that last for years.
The Felco 2 is the bypass hand pruner most tree and landscape crews know by sight. Forged aluminum handles, a hardened steel blade and a design where nearly every part can be replaced make the Felco 2 pruner a tool you buy once and maintain. It cuts green wood up to about an inch cleanly.
Hand pruners are the tool you use most and think about least, until a cheap one starts crushing stems and pinching your palm. Felco F2 pruning shears fix both problems. The bypass blade slices past the counter blade like scissors, leaving a clean cut that closes over well, which matters on young trees and ornamentals.
The handles are forged aluminum, light enough to carry on a belt all day and strong enough to take years of use. The geometry is simple and has barely changed in decades, which is a good sign. Crews standardize on it because everyone knows how it feels.
On a tree crew, the Felco 2 pruner is the tool for small clean-up cuts: sprouts at the base, suckers along a trunk, small branches on young trees during a structural prune. It rides in a holster on the belt, and once you are used to it you barely notice it is there.
It is also a good first serious tool for a new ground worker, simple enough to learn quickly and good enough to keep for years.
The Felco 2 is a full-size pruner for medium to large hands. If you have smaller hands or prune all day, the grip span can get tiring, and a smaller model or a rotating-handle version may suit you better. Left-handers should look at a dedicated left-hand model. For most people, though, the Felco pruners 2 are the right place to start.
Use the pruner within its range. Twisting it through a stem that is too thick springs the blades apart and dulls the edge. Switch to loppers or a hand saw like the Silky Zubat once the wood gets past about an inch.
The rubber shock absorber and cushion between the handles take the jolt out of each cut, which matters over hundreds of cuts in a day. The wire cutter near the pivot is handy for snipping old tree ties and staking wire on young trees.
Clean sap off the blades after use, a quick wipe with a solvent and a drop of oil is enough. Hone the blade with a fine stone when it stops cutting cleanly, keeping the original bevel. Check the pivot: if the blades feel loose or the cut drags, adjust the nut so the blades close smoothly without play.
Almost everything on a Felco 2 can be replaced: blade, counter blade, spring, bolt and nut. That is the real value of the tool. Instead of throwing it out when the blade chips, you replace the part and keep working.
When moving between trees on plant health care work, consider disinfecting the blades to avoid spreading disease. Shop more pruners and loppers.
A spare blade and spring in the truck means a dropped or chipped pruner is a five-minute fix, not a lost tool.

About 1 inch (25 mm) in green wood. Thicker or dead hardwood is better handled with loppers or a hand saw.
Yes. The cutting blade, counter blade, spring and most hardware are sold as spare parts.
It is a full-size pruner. People with smaller hands often prefer a more compact Felco model.
Use a fine sharpening stone on the beveled side of the cutting blade, following the original angle, then remove any burr on the flat side.
