PruningGround

The Jameson Big Mouth pruner is a pulley pole pruner head with a wider jaw than a standard head. The pulley multiplies your pull on the rope, so cutting larger stems overhead takes less effort.

Why the pulley helps

A pole pruner without a pulley relies on your arm strength through a straight pull. Adding a pulley gives mechanical advantage, so the same pull delivers more force at the blade. On bigger stems near the top of the head's capacity, that is the difference between one clean cut and a stuck blade.

Paired with the Big Mouth's wider opening, it is a strong choice for lifting canopies, clearing sidewalks and dropping small limbs off structures.

Cut quality matters on pole work just as it does aloft. Cut just outside the branch collar, avoid leaving stubs and don't tear bark by pulling a limb down before the cut finishes. For heavier limbs, make a small undercut with a pole saw first so the bark doesn't strip. Keep a spare spring and pull rope in the truck, since those are the parts that wear first. Store the head clean and dry, with the blade sheathed if you have a cover.

Keeping it sharp

Keep the blade sharp and the pivot clean. Replace the return spring when the jaw stops opening briskly, and replace the rope when it frays or glazes. Check that the pulley turns freely.

Work clear of power lines unless qualified and using properly rated tools. For kits and other pole pruners, see our pruners and loppers range.
