Buying guide

Choosing rigging line

Size by the loads you lower and the blocks and lowering devices you use. A 1/2 inch line is good for lighter pruning and small removals, while 5/8 and 3/4 inch handle bigger wood. Double-braid ropes are strong and absorb shock; firmer braids hold shape on blocks.

Keep rigging rope separate from climbing rope, inspect it for cuts and glazing, and retire it after severe shock loads or damage.

Care and retirement

Rigging rope takes repeated shock loading and abrasion. Look for glazing, flat spots, cuts, pulled strands and hard or crunchy sections that point to core damage. Severe shock loads can damage rope internally even when it looks fine on the outside, so retire rope after a big dynamic event.

Keep rigging lines away from the saw, use a chafe sleeve over rough bark, and store rope clean and dry. Label rigging and climbing ropes clearly so they never get mixed. Order ahead so a spare rigging line is on the truck before the current one needs replacing.

Common questions

What size rigging rope should I buy first?

Many crews start with 1/2 or 5/8 inch, matched to their block and lowering device.
