A synthetic support system from Yale Cordage for limbs and codominant stems.
The Yale Guardian bracing system is a synthetic tree support system from Yale Cordage for supplemental support of codominant stems and heavy limbs. It is a lighter, quicker install than traditional steel cable for many jobs.
Synthetic systems are installed high in the crown between stems to limit how far a weak union or heavy limb can move. Many wrap the stems rather than relying on drilled hardware, are light enough to carry aloft in one trip, and let the tree move naturally in the wind instead of holding it rigid.
Deciding whether and where to support a tree is an arborist assessment. Follow Yale's instructions and ANSI A300 guidance for system selection and placement.
Synthetic systems are also popular because they reduce the need for drilling, which some clients and arborists prefer to avoid on valuable trees. Lighter components are easy to carry and install aloft, and adjustments can be made in place. Keep records of each install, including date, location and tension, so future inspections can track how the system and tree are performing.
Size the system to the stems involved and set it at the tension the manufacturer specifies. Inspect it on a regular schedule and after big storms for abrasion, UV damage, slippage and bark growth around the system. Related cordage is in rigging rope.
Supplemental support reduces risk but does not eliminate it. Work aloft only with trained crew under ANSI Z133.

Service life depends on the product, exposure and conditions. Follow Yale's guidance and inspect regularly.
