Buying guide

Tools for cleanup and grounds work

A wide, stiff rake moves chips, sawdust and small brush fast, and replacement tines or handles keep a good rake in service. A steel leaf rake is the backup for finish cleanup on lawns.

Tripod orchard ladders give stable footing on uneven ground for pruning small trees and hedges; set the third leg into the canopy side and follow the ladder's duty rating. Backpack sprayers and trimmer line round out the kit for crews that also handle grounds maintenance.

Keeping tools in service

Rakes with replaceable tines and handles last for years if you swap the parts that break. Store wooden handles out of the weather and check for cracks; a broken handle mid-cleanup is a common source of cuts and strains.

Backpack sprayers should be cleaned after each use and used only with products labeled for the job, following the label for PPE and mixing. Trimmer line comes in different shapes and diameters; match the size your trimmer head is rated for. Keeping these tools on the truck lets a tree crew finish a job site completely instead of leaving the cleanup for someone else.

Common questions

Is an orchard ladder safe for tree work?

Tripod orchard ladders are built for uneven ground, but they still need firm footing, correct setup and use within their rated load. They are not a substitute for climbing gear or an aerial lift on larger trees.
