GroundMaintenance

Husqvarna trimmer line in the TrimForce grade is an all-purpose string for grass, weeds and general cleanup. It is the line to keep on the truck for finishing a job site after the tree work is done.

Where everyday line fits

Most trimming on a tree crew is light work: tidying edges after a removal, knocking down weeds around a stump before grinding, clearing a path to a backyard tree so the crew can haul brush. You do not need premium line for that. A good general-purpose Husqvarna trimmer line cuts cleanly, feeds without jamming and costs less per foot.

Save heavier reinforced line for fence lines, rocky ground and woody brush where standard line snaps too often.

For a crew, the cost of line adds up quickly over a season. A reliable everyday line that does not jam or weld on the spool saves more time than a premium line used where it is not needed.

Matching line to your trimmer

Line diameter is the first thing to get right. Use the size your head is designed for. Too heavy and the engine labors, the clutch heats up and the head wears early. Too light and the line breaks constantly and cuts poorly in thick grass.

Most bump heads list a maximum size on the head or in the manual. Fixed-line heads may need pre-cut lengths. If you run several trimmers, standardize on one size where you can so one spool covers the fleet.

Gas trimmers on a tree crew often double as brushcutters for clearing access. When that is the job, switch to a blade or a heavier line rated for the head, and always use the matching guard.

Winding and storage tips

Wind line tight and even in the direction marked on the spool and leave a little room at the top. Overfilled spools jam. Trim the tip at an angle to make threading easier.

Line dries out and gets brittle in sun and heat. Keep it in its packaging or a sealed bag, out of the cab dash, and rotate stock so old line gets used first. A brief soak in water before loading can help stiff line feed better.

If the head keeps jamming even with good line, check the spool and eyelets for wear. Grooved eyelets cut line and worn bump knobs stop feeding properly; both are cheap parts to replace.

When to upgrade

If you find yourself stopping every few minutes to bump out new line, it is worth stepping up to Husqvarna Titanium X-Pro trimmer line, which is built to last longer on hard surfaces. Whatever line you run, wear eye and hearing protection, use the trimmer guard and keep people well clear of the thrown debris. More cleanup gear is in our landscaper tools section.

Keeping one everyday line and one heavy-duty line on the truck lets the crew match the line to the job without overpaying on routine trimming.
