RiggingGroundPro grade

Yale Ultrex synthetic winch line in 5/16 in is sold by the foot so you can build a winch line or pulling line to the exact length you need. At 5/16 in it is a light line for small truck and ATV winches and short pulls.

Building your own line

Buying Ultrex by the foot lets you set the exact length your drum holds or your pull requires, instead of settling for a stock length. At 5/16 in it is a light line for small truck and ATV winches and short pulls. Synthetic line is much lighter than steel, handles easily in gloves, and does not develop broken wire strands.

You will need to terminate the ends with suitable hardware or a splice. If you are not trained in splicing this kind of line, have a rope shop do it. Finished lines and fittings are in rigging rope and winch line.

Use and inspection

Match the diameter to the winch maker's specification and use a smooth hawse fairlead where possible. Spool the line under some tension, and keep it off hot exhaust, sharp edges, and rough concrete.

Bulk line is also handy for spares. Keeping extra on the shelf means a damaged winch line can be cut back, re-terminated, and put back to work instead of waiting on a finished replacement. Small winch lines get chewed up quickly on rocky ground, so having a few extra feet on hand saves a trip to the shop.

Inspect synthetic winch line for cuts, abrasion, melted or fused fibers, and heavy discoloration, and replace it if the line is damaged. Keep everyone out of the line of pull while winching, and use the winch and line only within their rated capacity and the manufacturer's instructions.
