A rigging pulley for redirecting and managing lowering lines on removals.
The Rock Exotica Downrigger is a rigging pulley built for the lowering side of tree work, where you need to redirect a line cleanly and keep friction where you want it. Rock Exotica builds its hardware for rope access and rescue, and this pulley brings that build quality to arborist rigging.
In tree work, a downrigger setup is about controlling where the lowering line runs. Hung from a sling in the tree, a pulley like this redirects the line so the load swings away from targets, or so the ground worker gets a better angle to the lowering device at the base.
It sees real dynamic forces when a piece is caught, so treat it as rigging hardware and size the rest of the system to match.
A redirect also keeps the lowering line off bark and out of tight crotches where it would wear. On big removals, a well-placed pulley can turn an awkward drop straight into the yard into a clean, controlled descent onto the lawn. Plan the angle before the first cut and check it once the first piece is down.
Hang the pulley from a sling choked or girth-hitched to a sound, well-sized part of the tree, and connect with a locking carabiner of suitable strength. Keep the line running in the sheave without rubbing the side plates.
Before each job, check that the sheave spins freely, the side plates close and lock, and there are no cracks, deep scores or rope burns. Retire hardware that has been shock loaded beyond its rating or dropped from height onto a hard surface. Rigging is not life support; keep it separate from your climbing system and work to ANSI Z133.

It redirects the lowering line so loads come down where you want them and the ground worker has a clean angle to the friction device.
Do not mix rigging and life-support gear. Use climbing hardware rated and intended for life support, per the maker's instructions.
