ClimbingRigging

The Weaver 16 oz throw weight is a heavier bag for dense canopy, thicker line and rough bark where a lighter weight hangs up. It has a ring for tying your throw line and a durable, bright shell.

Getting line into the canopy

When the canopy is thick or the line has to drag over rough bark to drop back to the ground, a heavier bag helps. Sixteen ounces has the momentum to push through and the mass to come back down on its own.

Throw weights work best with a slick throw line and a cube or bag that lets the line pay out without tangling. Different weights suit different heights and line diameters, so many climbers carry two. See all options in throw weight and line.

It also helps on windy days, when a lighter bag drifts off line.

Practice pays off with any throw weight. A few minutes of low, controlled shots on an easy tree before the job builds the feel for release point and line management that makes high shots routine.

Using it safely

The extra weight means more force on impact, so take extra care with your drop zone. Check the ring and shell before each use, and retire a bag that is split or leaking shot.

Clear the drop zone and call out before every throw. Keep people, vehicles and power lines well clear, and never throw near energized conductors. Once the line is set, pull your climbing line up and inspect the union and the tie-in point before you climb, following ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions.
