Buying guide
Good throw line is slick enough to run through crotches and over bark without hanging up, and stiff enough to resist tangling. Diameter is usually just under 2 to around 2.2 mm. Thinner line throws farther; thicker line is easier to handle. Bright colors help you see it in the canopy. Store it in a cube or bag, and replace it when the cover fuzzes or it starts to kink. Throw line is not life-support rope.
Samson Zing-It is a well-known slick throwline that resists abrasion. Teufelberger Dynaglide is another popular choice with very low stretch. Target line is a bright option designed for visibility in the canopy. Line length usually comes on spools long enough for tall trees. Pick a line that matches your throw weight and the height of the trees you climb. Keep a spare line in the truck so a damaged or stuck line does not stop the job.
Paracord is rougher and stretchier, and it tends to hang up and tangle. Purpose-made arborist throw line runs much more cleanly.
