Adjustable Slings: Whoopie Slings for Rigging

An adjustable sling, usually a whoopie sling, lets you set the length in seconds so one sling fits many stem sizes. Arborists use them to hang blocks and choke pieces.

Buying guide

Using whoopie slings

A whoopie sling has a fixed eye on one end and a buried, adjustable section that locks under load. Pull it snug around the stem and the bury grips. Use the size and strength suited to the load and the block.

Do not adjust a whoopie under load, keep the adjustable section within its marked range, and inspect the bury and eyes for wear before every job.

Sizes and uses

Smaller diameters, such as 1/2 inch, suit light rigging and redirects. Larger sizes such as 5/8 and 3/4 inch handle heavier wood and hold blocks for bigger removals. Pick the size that matches your block and loads, and carry a couple so you can set one for the block and another for the piece.

Whoopies are also handy for friction devices mounted on the trunk and for anchoring speed lines. Keep them clean and away from the saw, and retire any sling that shows a cut, heavy glazing or a damaged bury.

Common questions

Can a whoopie sling slip?

When used within its range and loaded correctly it locks. Damaged or overextended slings can fail, so inspect them.
