RiggingGround

A heavy duty webbing sling is a flat strap of sewn synthetic webbing that wraps the trunk or a log and grips well. Arborists use webbing slings to anchor blocks, set redirects, and lift or drag logs, and they lie flat against bark for less wear on trees you are keeping.

Where a webbing sling fits

Flat webbing is a good arborist sling where you want grip and bark protection. It wraps a stem or a log like a belt, so it spreads pressure and is less likely to slide. Use one as a block anchor on trees you are pruning, as a choker on logs for the loader, or as a basket around a short round.

Webbing packs flat and dries quickly, and a few in the truck cover a lot of jobs.

Webbing also works well for lifting logs with a loader or excavator, where its wide contact grips bark and reduces slipping. Pick lengths that suit the diameters you usually handle.

Keep them separate from climbing gear.

Ratings and inspection

Each sling carries a tag with its rated capacity by hitch. Choose a sling with margin for the hitch and the dynamic loads of tree work. Keep chainsaws and sharp edges well away; webbing cuts easily under load.

Before each use, check for cuts, burns, broken stitching, holes and a readable tag. Retire damaged slings. Rigging slings are not life support; follow ANSI Z133.

Store webbing out of sunlight, since UV weakens synthetic fibers over time.

Wash muddy slings in clean water and let them dry before packing.
