Maintenance

3-IN-ONE dry graphite lube is a spray lubricant that dries to a thin film instead of staying wet. Climbers use it on sticky carabiner gates and hardware because it does not leave the oily coating that collects sawdust and grit.

Using it on climbing hardware

A carabiner gate that sticks open is a hazard, and the usual cause is sap, dust, and old grease in the hinge and lock sleeve. Clean the hardware first with warm water and a brush, let it dry fully, then apply a small amount of dry lube to the hinge, spring, and lock sleeve. Work the gate a few times and wipe off any excess.

Keep lubricant off rope contact surfaces and away from your rope, slings, and textile gear. Check the hardware maker's instructions first, since some manufacturers recommend a specific cleaner or lubricant. Graphite can mark light-colored gear, so go easy with it.

Keep your hardware working

Lubrication is part of regular inspection, not a fix for damaged gear. If a gate still sticks after cleaning and lubing, or if you find cracks, burrs, or worn grooves, retire the carabiner.

Store hardware dry and away from fuel, bar oil, and battery acid in the truck, since chemicals can damage both metal and textile gear. Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard (ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions), be inspected before every climb, and be used only by trained climbers. Shop auto-locking carabiners when it is time to replace a worn one.
