A light, auto-locking DMM carabiner with a snag-free nose for everyday climbing.
The DMM Shadow is a DMM carabiner with an auto-locking Locksafe gate and a keylock nose that slides through rope eyes and bridges without snagging. Climbers use it for hitch connections, lanyard ends and anywhere a dependable all-round locking connector is needed.
DMM carabiners have a long reputation in climbing for clean gates, smooth action and tight quality control. The Shadow is a general-purpose locker that suits most connections on a modern arborist saddle: the hitch on a split tail, the end of a rope lanyard, or a pulley on the bridge.
The keylock nose matters more than people think. A notched nose can catch on a sewn eye or a rope bridge as you clip and unclip. The smooth keylock shape slides through, which means fewer fumbles when you are tied in at height.
Many climbers run a matched set of the same locking carabiner across their saddle. When every connector opens the same way, your hands learn the motion and you stop thinking about it, which counts when you are tired or working in poor light.
The Shadow is light enough that carrying several costs little. Keep one or two spares on a rear loop for redirects, a rescue pulley or a hitch that needs to be rebuilt mid-climb.
An auto-locking gate locks itself every time it closes, so you do not have to remember to screw it shut. On a climbing system that is a real safety advantage, and it is why many tree climbing standards and company policies call for self-closing, self-locking connectors in life-support positions.
Screw gates still have a place for semi-permanent connections, but for connections you open and close all day, an auto-locker like the Shadow is the better tool. Compare options in our auto-locking carabiners range.
Any carabiner is strongest when loaded along its spine, gate closed and locked. Avoid cross-loading, three-way loading and loading over an edge. Keep the gate away from tree limbs and other hardware that could push it open.
Watch for the carabiner rotating so the gate ends up against your saddle bridge or another connector. If that keeps happening, a captive-eye setup or a different arrangement may be better.
Before each climb, check that the gate closes and locks on its own, the spring is crisp, and there is no grit in the hinge or locking sleeve. Look for grooves worn by rope, sharp edges, cracks or corrosion.
Retire any carabiner that has been dropped onto a hard surface from height, shows deep wear or fails to lock reliably. Life-support gear has to meet the applicable standard and the manufacturer's instructions, get inspected before every climb, and be used only by trained climbers.
Keep a simple record of when each carabiner went into service. It makes it easier to spot gear that has been on the saddle for years and to rotate it out before it wears thin, and many company gear programs require a log like this anyway.

Yes. It is an auto-locking aluminum carabiner with a keylock nose, which suits most connections on an arborist saddle. Check the ratings on the spine against your company's requirements.
Strength ratings for the major axis, minor axis and gate open are laser marked on the spine. Read them on the carabiner you buy.
An auto-locking gate locks every time it closes, so it does not rely on you remembering to screw it shut. Most climbers use auto-lockers for life-support connections.
Retire it after a hard drop, if it shows grooves or sharp wear from rope, cracks, deformation, or a gate that does not close and lock cleanly.
