ClimbingGround

A 2 inch bronze swivel snap is a small snap hook with a swivel eye, made from corrosion-resistant bronze. Tree crews use it on tool tethers, throw line bags and gear lines where a swivel keeps things from twisting.

Where a small swivel snap earns its keep

Little snaps solve a lot of small problems on a tree job. Clip one on the end of a throw line to attach a weight or a bag, put one on a hand saw tether, or use one to hang a water bottle or radio from a saddle gear loop. The swivel lets the item spin without putting twists in the cord.

Bronze does not rust like plated steel, so it keeps working after a season of rain and sap. Larger load-rated snaps are in snap hooks.

Swivel snaps in this size are also useful on gear bags and tarps, and for clipping a rope bag to the truck rack so it does not blow away. Buying a few at once makes sense; they tend to wander off into other crew members' kits over a season.

Know its limits

This is a gear snap, not a connector for people or rigging. Never use it in a climbing system, lanyard, or anything that holds a climber or a load of wood. Life-support connectors must be rated and meet ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's requirements.

Check the gate spring now and then. A snap that no longer closes on its own should be replaced before it drops a tool out of the tree.

Bronze can still wear at the gate and swivel. Rinse off sap and grit now and then, and replace any snap with a loose swivel or bent gate.
