ClimbingPro grade

The Edelrid Triton is a double locking steel snap hook. The double-action keeper must be pressed before the gate opens, which makes it a secure, quick connector for the ends of lanyards and positioning gear.

Why a snap on a lanyard

Snap hooks have a narrower, deeper shape than carabiners and a keeper that must be pressed before the gate opens. On a positioning lanyard or flipline, that means you can clip to a D-ring with one hand while the other is on the stem, and the gate still cannot be opened by accident.

Steel makes the snap resistant to wear and knocks against spurs and bark. Only clip snap hooks to compatible connection points such as saddle D-rings. Clipping a snap to a rope, a sling, or another snap can load the gate or let it roll out.

Inspection and retirement

Before each climb, open the gate and let it snap shut. It should close fully and lock on its own without sticking. Look for cracks, sharp edges, grooves worn by rope, and deformation at the nose or hinge. Sap and grit are the usual cause of a lazy gate, so rinse and dry the carabiner and keep the gate mechanism clean.

Retire any carabiner that has been dropped from height onto a hard surface, shock loaded, or shows wear you cannot explain. Read the markings on the spine and confirm they meet what your system needs. Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard (ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions), be inspected before every climb, and be used only by trained climbers. See more snap hooks.
