Climbing

The Petzl Footape is an adjustable foot sling that clips to a handled ascender so you can stand up and push your weight up the rope. It is a simple, low-cost part of many SRS ascent setups.

How the Footape fits an ascent system

In a basic rope-walking or frog-style ascent, a handled ascender on the rope carries a foot loop. You stand in the loop to push up, then sit back on your saddle-mounted device while you slide the handled ascender higher. The Footape is that foot loop, and its adjustment lets you set the length so each stroke is efficient.

Getting the length right is the difference between short, tiring steps and smooth progress. Set it on the ground, try a few strokes and adjust. See other foot ascenders and foot loops for more options.

Some climbers run two foot loops for a rope-walking style, while others use a single loop with a knee ascender or foot ascender. The Footape suits either layout as long as it is clipped to a compatible handled ascender.

Use and inspection

The Footape is part of an ascent system, not a fall protection component on its own. Your life-support connection should always be your saddle-mounted device on a rated anchor. Check the webbing, stitching and buckle before each use, and replace the sling if it is cut, frayed or stiff.

Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard, be used per ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions, and be inspected before every climb by a trained user.

Keep it out of chainsaw reach and away from fuel and bar oil in the truck.
