SRS Climbing Devices

SRS climbing devices, often called a mechanical prusik when they replace a friction hitch, control your descent and positioning on a single stationary line. They let a climber ascend efficiently and work the canopy on one rope anchored at the base or high in the tree.

Buying guide

How SRS devices fit into a system

On a stationary rope the line does not move through the anchor; you move along it. That means your device does all the friction work, and it needs to give smooth control without excessive heat. Some setups use a friction hitch tended by a device, others use a fully mechanical unit. Ascent is handled with chest and foot ascenders or a rope-walking setup.

A good SRS kit also includes a base anchor or retrievable canopy anchor, quality connectors and a rope within the device's rated range. See moving-rope options on our MRS climbing devices page.

Stationary rope work also changes how you think about anchors. The anchor carries the full load on a single line, and a canopy anchor sees forces differently than a moving rope redirect. Choosing the anchor point and tie-off method is as important as choosing the device.

Choosing and using one

Look at rope compatibility, how the device handles a long descent, how easy it is to lock off for work positioning and how it behaves with gloves on. Learn SRS from a qualified trainer; anchoring and rescue are different from moving rope work.

Anything you hang your life on must meet the applicable standard, be used per the manufacturer's instructions and ANSI Z133, and be inspected before every climb by a trained user.

Many climbers keep both MRS and SRS gear in the truck and pick the system that suits each tree. Learning both makes you more flexible, and it gives you options for rescue.

Common questions

What is a mechanical prusik?

It is a mechanical device that does the job of a friction hitch, grabbing the rope under load and releasing for descent or advancing.

Do I need different rope for SRS?

Many arborist climbing lines work for SRS, but each device has an approved diameter and construction range. Match your rope to the device.
