ClimbingPro grade

The Petzl Chicane is an auxiliary brake that adds friction to a Petzl Zigzag so it can be used on a single rope. With the Chicane, the Zigzag becomes a smooth SRS work-positioning device.

What the Chicane does

A Zigzag is built for MRS, where the doubled rope supplies extra friction. On a single rope, it needs more. The Chicane sits below the Zigzag and adds that friction so descents stay controlled.

Climbers who already own a Zigzag can add SRS without buying a whole new device. Compare devices in devices for SRS.

The Chicane also lets you adjust friction on the fly, which helps when switching between steep and gentle descents or between ropes of different diameter within Petzl's range. On long descents from tall trees, being able to add a little friction keeps the speed steady and the device cooler, which is easier on both the rope and the climber.

Setup and inspection

Follow Petzl's setup steps exactly and use the rope diameters they list. Test the system low first.

Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard (ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions), be inspected before every use, and be used only by trained climbers. Inspect the Chicane and Zigzag for wear grooves, damaged parts and smooth action before every climb.

Keep both devices clean of sap and grit, which can change how they grip and release. Store them in your climbing bag away from heavy hardware, and replace wear parts as Petzl instructs.
