Buying guide

Device or hitch

Friction hitches for tree climbing, like the Distel or Valdotain tied in hitch cord, are light, cheap and adjustable, but they glaze, change with heat and moisture, and need a trained eye to dress and set. A mechanical prusik or friction device trades some cost and weight for repeatable behavior, smoother descents and easier one-handed tending. Many climbers run both: a device for daily work, and hitch cord kept in the kit. Whatever you use must be approved for life support by its manufacturer, matched to your rope, inspected before each climb, and learned under proper training.

MRS or SRS devices

Devices are usually built for one system. MRS devices work on a doubled rope that runs over your tie-in, while SRS devices work on a single fixed line, often with a rope wrench. Some can be configured for both with accessories. Start by choosing your system, then shop the matching subcategory below.

Read the device instructions closely for rope diameter and construction limits before you buy.

Common questions

Is a mechanical prusik safer than a friction hitch?

Neither is automatically safer. Each is safe when correctly matched to the rope, set up per instructions and used by a trained climber.

Can I use friction cord with a rope wrench?

Yes. Many SRS setups use a rope wrench with a hitch tied in friction cord. Check that the cord, wrench and rope are compatible.
