A mechanical friction device that replaces a hitch on MRS and SRS.
The Rock Exotica Unicender is a mechanical friction device that takes the place of a friction hitch for MRS climbing and can also be set up for SRS. It tends itself as you climb and holds when you let go.
A friction hitch works, but it needs tying, dressing and frequent cord replacement. The Unicender gives consistent friction from a machined device, tends easily and does not glaze like a hitch cord.
Climbers who want one device across both MRS and SRS often look at the Unicender. Compare devices in devices for MRS.
The Unicender also helps climbers who are hard on hitch cords, since there is no cord to glaze or wear through. It does take some learning, so practice with a qualified trainer before using it on the job.
Use the rope diameters and setup Rock Exotica lists, and practice low first. Friction varies by rope, so test your rope with the device before climbing high.
Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard (ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions), be inspected before every use, and be used only by trained climbers. Check the cams, springs, wear surfaces and connection points before each climb.
Keep the device clean of sap and grit, which can change how it grips the rope. Store it in your climbing bag away from sharp tools, and follow Rock Exotica's guidance on wear parts and service.
