Buying guide

Where rings help

A ring on your saddle bridge lets your climbing system slide side to side as you move, and a pair of rings on a sling makes a simple retrievable friction saver. Open rings can be installed on a bridge or sling without unthreading it. Check the strength rating, match the inside diameter to the rope or sling, and inspect for grooves and sharp edges before each climb.

Choosing rings

Solid aluminum rings, like the DMM anchor rings, are light and smooth. Steel rings resist wear better in high-friction spots. Petzl offers both closed rings and open rings that can be added to a bridge without removing it. Ring size matters: a larger inside diameter lets a rope run more freely. Retire any ring with deep wear grooves, cracks or sharp edges.

Rings used as a friction saver pair should be sized so the smaller ring passes through the larger one for retrieval. Check that combination before you head up the tree, and keep the instructions for each ring with your kit.

Common questions

What are climbing rings used for in tree work?

Mostly for rope bridges on saddles and for ring-and-ring friction savers, where they give a smooth, strong connection.
