ClimbingRigging

The Kong Futura hand ascender is a handled rope clamp for SRS ascents, and it also gets used for hauling and progress capture. Its ergonomic grip makes it comfortable for long climbs.

How climbers use it

Slide the Futura up the rope and stand on a foot loop or foot ascender clipped below it. On a rope-walking system, it rides above the chest or hip device as the upper handled clamp.

Outside of climbing, crews use handled ascenders to grab a line for hauling or for progress capture in a simple pull system. See other ascenders in ascent and descent.

Choose the hand that suits your climbing. Many climbers use a right-hand ascender on the upper position and keep their left hand for tending the system or a second device.

Setup and inspection

Check Kong's instructions for compatible rope diameters and connection points. Practice on the ground first.

Life-support gear must meet the applicable standard (ANSI Z133 and the manufacturer's instructions), be inspected before every use, and be used only by trained climbers. Inspect the cam teeth, spring, safety catch and frame before every use.

Keep the cam clean of sap and bark so it grips evenly, and store the ascender in your climbing bag away from heavy hardware. Retire it if the cam teeth are worn smooth or the frame shows damage.
