A ground tarp that keeps your climbing rope out of the dirt at the base of the tree.
The Teufelberger rope tarp is a ground sheet for your climbing line, laid at the base of the tree so the rope stays out of the dirt, sawdust, and mud while you climb. Many styles also wrap up to carry the rope.
Grit that gets into a climbing rope stays there, grinding the fibers each time the line runs through your hitch, pulley, or friction saver. A tarp at the base of the tree keeps the tail of the rope out of the dirt, sawdust, and wet grass for the whole climb. It also marks where the rope is, which helps the ground crew keep wood and the chipper away from it.
At the end of the day the rope gets flaked back onto the tarp and wrapped up for the ride home. Browse other specialty items in our other gear section.
Tarps are also handy on hard surfaces. Driveways and patios are rough on rope, and the tarp gives the line a smooth surface instead of concrete. On wet days it also keeps the rope out of puddles and mud.
Shake the tarp out before folding so sawdust and leaves do not end up inside the bundle. Dry it and the rope before storing, and keep both away from fuel, bar oil, and battery acid.
A tarp protects the rope from dirt but does not replace inspection. Run the rope through your hands before every climb and retire it according to Teufelberger's guidance and ANSI Z133 practice.

Both keep rope clean. A tarp gives a flat, visible spot at the tree; a bag is faster to carry and deploy. Many climbers use both.
Yes, though rigging lines are often long and heavy, so a large tarp or bag works best.
