ClimbingSafety

The Petzl Tanga is a connector positioning ring: a small accessory that holds a carabiner in place on a sling eye, lanyard termination or device attachment point. It stops the connector from flipping and cross-loading, so the load stays on the spine where it belongs.

What the Tanga does on a climbing system

A carabiner that is free to spin will eventually end up sideways, with the load across the gate or the minor axis. On a lanyard eye, a bridge or a device attachment point, that can happen without you noticing. The Tanga captures the connector so it stays in the orientation you set when you built the system.

Climbers fit these where a connector lives permanently: the carabiner on a positioning lanyard, the link between a mechanical device and its tether, or a sling eye that gets clipped and unclipped all day. It is a small part, but it removes one thing to check every time you move. Browse the rest of our climbing hardware for other configuration aids.

It is especially handy on systems you set up once and leave built, such as a mechanical device on its tether or a carabiner at the end of a lanyard. With the connector held in line, the gate stays away from bark, rope and other hardware, and you can see at a glance that everything is still sitting the way it should.

Fitting and inspection

Follow Petzl's instructions for which connectors and attachments the Tanga is designed to work with, and make sure the gate can still open and lock fully once it is fitted. It positions the carabiner; it does not carry load and is not a substitute for a properly rated connector.

Check it along with the rest of your life-support gear. Replace it if it is cracked, stretched or no longer holds the connector firmly. All climbing hardware should be used within ANSI Z133 practice and by trained climbers.
