CAMP Enigma Swivel

The CAMP Enigma is a compact swivel that sits between connectors so attached gear can turn freely under load. Climbers use it to stop rope twist in SRS and MRS setups and to keep devices facing the right way.

Where a swivel helps

Rope twist builds up as you spin on a line, especially on long SRS descents. A swivel lets the gear below it turn independently, so the rope can untwist instead of kinking above your device. It is also handy on a bridge to keep a device facing forward, and in rigging and rescue setups where loads spin.

The CAMP Enigma is small and light, so it does not add much bulk between your connectors.

Swivels also help in rescue and rigging setups where a spinning load can wind lines together. Placed in the right spot, a swivel lets the load turn without twisting the rope above it.

Setup and inspection

Load the swivel along its main axis between properly oriented connectors, and check that nothing cross-loads. Inspect it before use for cracks, wear, and smooth rotation, and retire it after a fall or if it binds. As part of a life-support system it must meet the applicable standard and be used per the manufacturer's instructions by trained climbers. Compare other swivels before you buy.

Keep it clean and dry, and rinse out grit after climbing in dusty or sandy conditions. A swivel that turns roughly is telling you it needs attention or retirement.
