DMM Mini Swivel

The DMM Mini Swivel is a small, lightweight swivel that lets two connections rotate independently, so your rope and devices stop fighting each other. It is the size climbers reach for when a full rescue swivel is more than the job needs.

Where a small swivel earns its place

Rope twist builds up any time a line runs over and over through the same system. On a long SRS ascent it shows up as kinks below your device, and on a tag line or haul line it shows up as hockles and a rope that will not coil. A swivel between the anchor and the device lets the rope unwind instead.

Climbers often put the DMM Mini Swivel under a rope wrench or between a bridge and a pulley, and some use it at the bottom of a throw line or haul rope. Clip it in with locking carabiners on both ends, and keep the gates facing away from the rope and the tree so nothing can press them open. A swivel adds one more link to the system, so keep it close to the device it serves rather than hanging it out on a long sling.

Inspection and limits

Check that it spins smoothly under light load, that both eyes are free of sharp edges and grooves, and that there is no play or grit in the bearing. Clean off sap with warm water and let it dry fully.

Read the strength marking on the body before you put it into a system, and never load a swivel sideways across its eyes. Life-support use must follow ANSI Z133, the manufacturer's instructions, and your training, and the gear should be inspected before every climb.
