ClimbingMaintenance

The 6mm Ocean Polyester thimble loop is a short loop of 6 mm polyester cord with a thimble protecting the eye. It is an accessory piece for attaching small gear and making tidy connections around your saddle and kit, where a thimble keeps a connector from wearing the cord.

What it is for

Small loops solve lots of small problems: hanging a handsaw, clipping a bag to a saddle, or making a neat connection for accessory gear. A thimble in the eye keeps a carabiner from pinching and wearing the cord, so the loop lasts longer and the connector sits where you want it.

Six millimeter cord is accessory size. Use it for gear and accessory jobs, not as a climbing hitch or a life-support connection unless the maker's rating and instructions specifically allow it.

Polyester cord holds its shape and resists stretch and sun better than many nylon cords, which suits small loops that live on a saddle all season. Keep a couple in the kit so one is always on hand for a quick fix.

Inspection

Check the cord for cuts and fuzzing and make sure the thimble is seated and not cracked or deformed. Replace the loop if either is damaged. Anything clipped into your life-support system still has to meet ANSI Z133 practice and the maker's instructions.

Label or color-code your accessory loops so they never get mistaken for rated hitch cords or slings when someone grabs gear in a hurry.
