Buying guide

Matching cord to rope

A hitch cord should be smaller in diameter than your climbing line and built to handle the heat of descents, which is why many are made with aramid or high-heat covers. An 8 mm cord on an 11 to 13 mm rope is a common starting point. A split tail is a length of cord with one terminated end that you tie into the hitch; an eye and eye has sewn or spliced eyes at both ends. Test any new hitch low and slow, retire glazed or stiff cord, and learn hitches under proper training.

Split tail or eye and eye

A split tail is tied directly into your hitch and is easy to adjust. An eye and eye cord has terminated ends that clip into a carabiner, which makes setup cleaner and helps with hitch tending using a pulley. Popular cords include the Yale Beeline in 8 mm, made with a high-heat cover. Practice tying and dressing your preferred hitch until it is consistent, and replace cords when they become glazed, stiff or fuzzy.
