Buying guide
Length depends on the hitch you tie and the rope diameter you climb. Spliced eyes are slimmer and fit through pulleys and carabiners easily; sewn eyes are common too. A hitch breaker sits above the hitch so it releases more smoothly. A hitch climber kit bundles a pulley, connectors and cord into one matched setup. Inspect cords for glazing and stiffness, follow each part's instructions, and test new setups close to the ground.
A hitch climber pulley, like the DMM Hitch Climber, clips between the eyes of your eye and eye prusik and attaches to your bridge. This keeps the hitch in line and lets you tend slack smoothly with one hand. A hitch breaker, such as Big Jim's, sits on top of the hitch to make releasing it easier on descents. Hand-spliced eyes, like the Yale Beeline, are slim and consistent. Set up and test any new combination low to the ground.
It depends on the hitch and rope diameter. Many climbers use around 28 to 32 inches for a VT on 11 to 13 mm rope, then adjust to taste.
