A rope bag that keeps your climbing line clean, flaked and ready to run.
The Edelrid Caddy II is a rope bag that holds a climbing line flaked and ready to feed out at the base of the tree. Keeping rope in a bag instead of piled in the dirt cuts down on grit working into the fibers, and it means the line pays out without knots when you need it.
Dirt is a slow killer for climbing rope. Grit works into the braid and grinds fibers from the inside every time the rope bends. A rope bag keeps the line off the ground at the tree and in the truck, and it keeps the rope flaked so it feeds out cleanly instead of coming up as a bird's nest.
Flake the rope into the bag from the end that will be tied off last, so the working end comes out on top. Clip the tail to the bag's tie-in point if it has one so you always know where the end is.
A rope bag also protects the line from the things that sit in a work truck: fuel, bar oil, battery acid and sharp tools. Many climbers keep one bag per rope so it is always clear which line is which, and how much of the season it has seen.
Empty the bag regularly and shake out debris. If your rope gets wet, let it dry loosely out of the sun before bagging it for storage.
When you flake rope into the bag, run your hands along it. Bagging is a natural time to feel for flat spots, stiff sections, cuts and glazing, and to catch damage before the next climb rather than at the top of the tree.
