Climbing

The DMM Phantom wiregate is one of the lightest full-strength wiregate carabiners around, and in tree work it is a great choice for racking pulleys, slings, and tools. Because it does not lock, it is not for any life-support connection.

Where the Phantom earns its keep

Every climber ends up with a saddle covered in pulleys, slings, a handsaw, a spare hitch, and a throw bag. Each of those wants a carabiner, and the weight adds up. A light wiregate like the Phantom shaves grams off every clip point and is easy to open with gloves on.

Wire gates are also less likely to freeze shut in winter and less prone to flutter open when the biner rattles against the saddle.

Many climbers use a handful of light wiregates to build a clean, organized saddle: one for the handsaw, one for spare slings, one for the throw bag, and a couple for pulleys and rigging rings.

Keep it out of life support

Non-locking carabiners are for gear only. Never use one to attach yourself to the climbing system, your lanyard, or any load-bearing part of a rigging system. Locking connectors for those jobs are elsewhere; see non-locking carabiners for more racking options.

Inspect gates for spring and closure, and retire any biner that is dropped from height, cracked, or grooved.

Keep racking carabiners a different color or shape from your life-support connectors so you never grab the wrong one in a hurry. Wash grit out of the gate with fresh water and let it dry.
