Buying guide
There are different types of carabiners for different jobs. A non locking carabiner is quick to clip with one hand, which is exactly why it is wrong for life support: a gate can be pushed open by a limb or rope. On the saddle, though, that speed is a plus. Pick rated climbing models over cheap keychain clips so they do not bend under a heavy saw, and give them a different color from your locking connectors so nobody grabs the wrong one.
A Petzl Rollclip has a built-in pulley, which can be handy for hitch tending in some setups when used as directed. Compact accessory carabiners, like the DMM XSRE or Rock Exotica RockX, are made for racking gear and save weight. Choose models with a gate that is easy to open with gloves and a keylock nose that will not snag on slings. Inspect them like any other carabiner, and retire any that are bent or have weak springs.
No. Life-support connectors in tree climbing must be self-locking. Non locking carabiners are for gear only.
