Climbing

The Petzl Ange L is a lightweight non-locking carabiner with Petzl's MonoFil keylock gate, a single wire gate that closes on a keylock nose so it does not snag. Tree climbers rack pulleys, slings and spare hardware on it to save weight on a loaded saddle.

Why climbers like the Ange L

A full saddle gets heavy fast, and every gram of hardware adds up by the end of a long removal. The Ange L trims weight while still giving you a full-size gate opening. The MonoFil gate is a single bent wire that seats on a keylock nose, so it slides off slings and rope without hooking, unlike a classic notched wire gate.

On a tree job it is ideal for racking a pulley, a spare friction hitch or a handsaw lanyard where you can clip and unclip it with one hand. See our other non-locking carabiners if you want a heavier or cheaper racking clip.

Because it is so light, many climbers carry several Ange L clips: one for a spare locking carabiner, one for slings, one for a pulley and hitch cord. Grouping gear this way speeds up setting a redirect or a rigging point, because you are not sorting through a pile of hardware on a single loop.

Use it as a racking clip only

The Ange L has no locking sleeve. A gate that can be opened by a branch or a rope running across it does not belong in a life-support system, and ANSI Z133 requires self-closing, self-locking connectors for climbing. Keep the Ange on gear loops and racks.

Check the gate spring and the keylock nose regularly. Retire the carabiner if the gate does not snap shut, the wire is bent, or the body shows sharp wear grooves.
