Climbing

The DMM Prest-In grommet is a small keeper that holds a carabiner in place on a sling, eye or attachment point. Keeping the carabiner oriented reduces the chance of it rotating onto the gate or loading across the minor axis.

Why configuration aids matter

A carabiner that is free to flip can end up loaded the wrong way. A grommet or keeper holds it in position on a sling or eye so it stays spine-loaded and gate-out. Climbers use keepers on lanyard ends, bridges and device attachments to keep their system tidy and predictable.

Keepers are cheap and small, so it makes sense to have spares in your kit. Replace them when they start to stretch or crack, and check that each one still holds the carabiner firmly in position.

What a keeper is not

A grommet is not load-bearing. It only holds the carabiner in place; all loads go through the sling and the carabiner.

Check the keeper during your pre-climb inspection, replace it if it is cracked or loose, and make sure it does not interfere with the gate. Fit it according to DMM's instructions and use your system within an ANSI Z133 program.

Keepers are especially useful on lanyards, where the carabiner is clipped and unclipped many times a day. A good keeper means the carabiner sits the same way every time you reach for it, so you can clip in faster and with fewer mistakes. Check that the sling or eye is still free to move as designed once the keeper is fitted.
