ClimbingPro grade

The DMM Perfect O with Captiv bar is a symmetrical oval auto-locking carabiner with a captive bar that keeps whatever it holds from rotating out of position. Arborists use it on pulleys, rope wrenches and lanyard adjusters that need to sit square and stay put.

What the Captiv bar does

The plain Perfect O is a favorite for devices because the oval shape keeps them centered. The Captiv version adds a small bar inside the carabiner that captures the connection, so the carabiner cannot flip around and cross-load. That matters on a device that sees a lot of movement, like a hitch-tending pulley or a lanyard adjuster on a saddle ring.

If you already run plain Perfect O carabiners, the Captiv model is a drop-in upgrade for the spots where you keep catching a carabiner in the wrong orientation. See other locking options in our auto-locking carabiners.

It is a small part, but on a busy saddle it saves a lot of fussing with carabiners that have rolled onto the gate. Keep a couple of plain Perfect O carabiners for spots where you clip and unclip all day, and use the Captiv version where the connection stays put.

Inspection

Before each climb, check that the gate opens, closes and locks fully on its own, that the Captiv bar is intact and seated, and that there are no grooves from rope wear or sharp burrs. Rinse out grit and sap, and never file or lubricate it with anything DMM does not approve.

Retire the carabiner after a significant fall or drop onto a hard surface. Life-support use must follow ANSI Z133, the manufacturer's instructions, and your training, and the gear should be inspected before every climb.
