ClimbingMaintenance

The Teufelberger Pulleysaver replacement lanyard is the rope section that connects the pulley and ring on a Pulleysaver. The hardware usually outlasts the rope, so a new lanyard puts the whole unit back to work without buying a complete saver.

When to replace it

The rope on a friction saver takes abuse: bark abrasion, sap, sun and grit worked in by the climbing line. Replace the lanyard when the cover is glazed, fuzzed deep into the strands, stiff, cut or flattened, or when you cannot confidently say it is sound. A tired lanyard is the usual reason a Pulleysaver gets retired.

Inspect the pulley sheave, side plates and ring before you fit the new lanyard. If the hardware is grooved, cracked or the sheave does not spin freely, replace that too.

Keeping a spare lanyard on the truck also means a damaged saver does not end the climb. If the rope takes a nick from a saw or catches a sharp edge, you can swap it on the ground and keep working instead of switching to a different system mid-job.

Fitting

Assemble the lanyard and hardware exactly as Teufelberger's instructions show, and check the finished saver on the ground before you climb on it. This is life-support gear. Use it only within the manufacturer's instructions and ANSI Z133 practice, inspect it before every climb, and retire it when in doubt.

Log the date you fit the new lanyard. A simple record of when each part went into service makes it much easier to decide when the next replacement is due.
