Climbing

The Petzl Eclipse is a throw line storage bag that opens into a stable cube at the base of the tree and folds flat for transport. Line stacks into it neatly, so it feeds out without snagging when you launch the throw bag, and missed throws go back in fast.

At the base of the tree

Open the Eclipse, flake your throw line into it and set it on level ground in front of you. As the throw bag flies, the line peels off the top of the stack instead of catching on grass, sticks and boots. If you miss, pull the line back into the cube and throw again without stopping to untangle.

Secure the tail end so the whole line does not follow the bag over the limb, and keep the cube clear of the drop zone if you are working near a crew.

The Eclipse also suits climbers who carry two throw lines of different weights or diameters. Keep each in its own cube and label them, so you grab the right line for a high crotch or a short, tight throw without sorting through a tangle.

Packing up

Pull the line in, drop the throw weight on top and fold the cube down. Check the line for wear as it comes in, and replace it when it is fuzzed, glazed or flattened.

Throw line kits get used on nearly every climb, so small time savings add up. A clean, contained line means fewer re-throws, less frustration and less time standing at the base of the tree before the real work starts.
