ClimbingGround

The Petzl Duffel 65 is a 65 liter transport bag built from heavy coated fabric, with a wide opening and carry straps that let you haul it by hand or on your back. It swallows a saddle, a climbing line and a set of hardware, which makes it a solid one-bag kit for a climber.

A one-bag climbing kit

Plenty of climbers like to keep everything for the day in a single bag: saddle, climbing line, friction saver, hitch cords and spare connectors. A 65 liter duffel is big enough for that without turning into a sack you cannot lift. The wide opening means you can see what is inside without dumping it on the ground.

Pack the rope at the bottom and the saddle on top so you can pull the saddle out first at the tree. Keep sharp tools, files and handsaws in a separate case so they cannot nick your rope in transit.

A duffel this size also makes a good home for a full storm or travel kit, where you need to carry spare cords, a second saddle bridge or a backup friction saver. The tough fabric shrugs off gravel, wet grass and the bed of a truck far better than a light backpack.

Care

The coated fabric wipes clean of sap and mud. Let the bag and your gear dry fully before closing it up after a wet job, and store it out of direct sun.

Buy a bag sized for what you actually carry. Too small and gear gets crammed in and stays damp; too big and things slide around and get lost at the bottom. If you run separate climbing and rigging kits, a bag for each keeps the two from mixing.
