ClimbingPro grade

The Petzl PANTIN foot ascender straps to your boot and grabs the rope as you step, so you can walk up a stationary rope. Paired with a chest or knee ascender, it makes SRS ascents faster and less tiring.

How it speeds up an ascent

On a stationary rope, the PANTIN grips the line each time you step down and slides up as you lift your foot. Combined with a chest ascender or a knee system, you can walk up long access lines without burning out your arms, then switch to your descent device at the top.

Setting up a rope walking system takes some fine tuning. The foot ascender should sit snugly on your boot, and your chest or knee ascender should be adjusted so the rope runs straight between them. Spend time at ground level getting the setup right before you start long ascents.

Climbers usually run it on the right or left foot to match their other ascenders. Browse our foot ascenders and foot loops for alternatives.

Safe use

The PANTIN is an aid to climbing, not a primary attachment point. Always stay connected to the rope with your main ascent system or device.

Check the cam teeth, spring and strap before each climb, and keep mud and sap out of the cam. Follow Petzl's instructions, learn rope walking under supervision, and work within your crew's ANSI Z133 procedures.

Wash mud off the PANTIN after dirty days and let it dry before packing it away. A cam packed with grit can slip on the rope, and a worn strap can let the ascender twist off your boot mid-step.
